Don Apgar

Director, Merchant

Don has joined the Javelin team as the Director of the Merchant Payments Practice, building on a 40-year career in banking and card payments. Beginning in the 1980’s with Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co in New York, Don was an innovator in building electronic card processing into a cash management tool for global brands like Hilton, Marriott, and Hertz. He also introduced 3rd party card acceptance into Allied Department Stores, owner of iconic stores like Lord & Taylor, Bon Marche, Block’s, Maas Bros., Herkimer’s and many others. Following the acquisition of the bank’s business by NaBANCO, Don went on to lead the enterprise sales team at First Data Corp during the fast growth of big box retail and global travel brands.

Moving into card issuing, Don was selected to lead sales and marketing for Citicorp Retail Services, building retail credit programs for companies like Kohl’s, US Navy, Guitar Center and The Gap, then Citi Commercial Cards with programs for 3M, Ford Motor Co, Continental Airlines, and many others.

While at Fleet Bank (acquired by Bank of America), Don led a regional sales team that brought a bundled solution of payment processing, business banking, and insurance to SMBs in New York.  Don went on to build the agent bank sales program at DAS, the ISO/agent channel program at PAI, and the VAR/ISV business at TransFirst, driving a successful exit to TSYS for $2.2B.

After leading the Merchant Services and Acquiring Practice at Mercator Advisory Group, Don joined Cross River Bank to define and execute their card payments and acquiring strategy. Don has rejoined Javelin to bring his expertise to lead the Merchant payments Practice.
