Overview
The one constant in the world of payments is change. The changes driven by vertical SaaS, embedded payments, and artificial intelligence will continue to force banks and payment companies to adapt and stay relevant in a fast changing environment.
Javelin sees three forces continuing to push the payments industry in 2027: growing checkout transparency, the verticalization of acquiring driven by the increasing demand for functional granularity in workflows, and the mainstream implementation of AI across payment operations at both merchants and infrastructure providers. Each reflects the same underlying shift: Payments are moving from a discrete transaction function to an embedded commerce operating layer. The companies that win will not simply move money efficiently, they will help merchants convert more customers, manage risk more intelligently, operate with greater precision, and adapt to customer buying journeys that are becoming less linear and more intuitive.
The disappearing checkout captures the continued erosion of the traditional payment moment. Stored credentials, wallets, tokenization, passkeys, subscriptions, and agentic commerce embed checkout in the purchase workflow and, in turn, reduce the need for consumers to stop and “check out” in the old sense. Consumers will always demand checkout flexibility regarding payments, shipping options, gift wrapping, etc. However, for most routine purchases, customers prefer clicking the “buy now” button and collapsing the checkout workflow into the shopping experience. Buy now, pay later and other innovative payment tools are moving to product pages at the very beginning of the customer’s shopping journey, helping customers envision the affordability of the products they are browsing.
Scale in acquiring is also being redefined. Volume, transactions, and merchant count still drive cost-structure efficiencies. Yet low-cost, one-size-fits-all payment solutions no longer appeal to small- and medium-sized businesses looking for holistic, turnkey solutions. Revenue drivers and competitive advantages in acquiring are shifting toward vertical expertise, software integration, and tools designed for the specific workflows of restaurants, healthcare, B2B, field services, and other increasingly specialized markets. The payments market is now so large that overall market share is less meaningful than market share in key vertical segments.
AI is the third accelerant. While agentic shopping will attract headlines, the more immediate impact will come from fraud prevention, risk scoring, authorization optimization, onboarding, reconciliation, dispute management, and service automation. Together, these trends point to a payments market where trust, data, identity, software, and decisioning are converging. The strategic question for 2027 is not, “Are you using AI?” but rather, “How are you using AI?”
