Overview
Javelin’s payments coverage spans the full breadth of the industry, and each payments practice contributes forward-looking analysis as part of our 2027 Trends coverage. Emerging Payments looks into the 2030s, identifying developments that will matter across payments—even beyond payments alone. For 2027, we have identified three trends that should occupy teams and leaders responsible for the longer-term strategic view.
The first is the emergence of an agentic micropayment economy. Nearly two decades after bitcoin and more than three decades after the commercial web, the growth of personal agents, stablecoin-funded wallets, and digital goods creates a new opening for small-value transactions. Though Javelin does not expect material volume or value in 2027, the concept and its associated capabilities will demand technical support and strategy attention in verticals where agents can create, request, and consume digital content.
The emergence of agents creates the need for agentic authentication tools. As consumer-owned agents begin to act across commerce, service, and payments environments, enterprises will need ways to verify agent ownership, permissions, and authenticity. 2027 will not be the year agentic interaction becomes mainstream, but it will be the year organizations must identify the technical stack that lets them participate safely.
The digitization of physical identification fuels the convergence of digital ID and biometric authentication, which will see a major use case around age verification. Regulatory clarification has improved the outlook for mobile driver’s licenses and other verifiable credentials in financial onboarding, signaling broader commercial readiness. Javelin believes age verification will be one of the first visible use cases at scale, especially when delivered through thoughtful customer experience design and integrated into broader identity verification flows.
