Overview
Agentic commerce is advancing faster than the payments infrastructure needed to support it, making wallets the most practical bridge between today’s transactions and a future with autonomous purchases. Though some types of agents are increasingly capable of discovering products and acting on behalf of consumers, issuers, processors, acquirers, and merchants are still developing the authorization, trust, and credential-management frameworks required for agent payments. As a result, wallet-based models are emerging as the near-term approach for agentic commerce.
Javelin predicts the market is unlikely to converge around a single type of agent. Four types—integrated, discovery, aggregated, and connected agents—each have different requirements for payments and monetization. The company that owns the customer relationship may not be the one providing the underlying AI capabilities. This will create distinct brand and model layers with separate revenue opportunities. Payments incumbents increasingly see value in the infrastructure layer rather than betting on a specific consumer-facing winner.
Key questions discussed in this report:
- Will AI agents need wallets to complete transactions, or will some agent models become wallets themselves?
- How do different types of agents—integrated, discovery, aggregated, and connected—change the payment capabilities, risk controls, and merchant enablement required for agentic commerce?
- Which companies are building the wallet and infrastructure layers that could support agent-initiated commerce regardless of which consumer-facing agents win?
- What should financial institutions, payment providers, merchants, and technology platforms do now to prepare for agent-influenced discovery, credential selection, and transaction routing?
