Overview
Canadian banks still control the majority of consumers’ primary digital banking relationships, but the margin for error is shrinking. CIBC emerged as the strongest all-around performer in Javelin’s 2026 Canadian Digital Banking Scorecard in the online and mobile divisions, leading or contending for top positions across most categories. Scotiabank finished a close second in mobile banking, splitting first-place finishes with CIBC across the six categories. RBC showed particular strength online and captured first place in three of six categories.
The bigger story is how much room remains for improvement in both channels for Canadian banks—and how precarious the situation has become as challengers crowd in, offering more immersive digital journeys. Ease of Use—the biggest driver of digital banking satisfaction—produced median scores of just 38%, whereas Security Empowerment and Financial Fitness lagged even further behind. Digital experiences remain overwhelmingly transactional and focused on the short term, opening the door to new entrants that simplify complex tasks and help consumers manage their finances for the road ahead.
Key questions discussed in this Mobile & Online Banking report:
- Which FIs are setting the pace for digital banking engagement in Canada?
- Which customer needs are Canadian banks still failing to sufficiently address in digital channels?
- How vulnerable are traditional banks to fintech and neobank disruption?
- What capabilities will define digital banking leaders in an open banking future?
