Overview
Commercial and enterprise payments are entering a period of rapid transformation as artificial intelligence takes an active role in accounts payable and other financial workflows. In an environment where individual payments can range from a few dollars to millions of dollars, innovation is occurring across every layer of the ecosystem, from corporate ERP systems and transaction processing to payment orchestration.
AI plays a fundamentally different role in commercial payments than it does in consumer payments. In the consumer market, AI personalizes experiences, simplifies transactions, improves underwriting, and strengthens security. In commercial payments, the focus shifts to securely automating complex business workflows and acting on the enterprise’s behalf.
Commercial AI is being applied to invoice matching, cash management, working-capital optimization, supplier management, and the broader accounts payable process. These applications are inherently more involved and must coordinate multiple parties and data sources, including ERP systems, corporate cash positions, supplier information, payment terms, contracts, invoices, and systems that may operate through different protocols and interfaces. They center on workflow, control, liquidity, payment timing, and efficiency. The central questions are which payment method to use, when to pay, how to apply contractual terms, and how to maintain appropriate oversight. A transaction might involve several charges on an employee expense account, or it could represent a multimillion-dollar cross-border payment. In either case, AI helps the enterprise make and execute a better-controlled, more informed payment decision.
Three trends will shape commercial payments in 2027, driven by the maturation of agentic AI, the growing importance of payment orchestration, and payment networks’ increasing focus on virtual cards. As adoption accelerates, virtual cards are poised to overtake traditional commercial card payments before the end of the decade. In short, agents manage decisions and workflow, orchestration coordinates the payment process, and virtual cards are a secure, tokenized payment function that payment networks are standing up against options such as ACH, FedNow, RTP, and checks.
