Overview
Debit has long been the workhorse of the payments system, but it has been anything but static. Accelerating digitalization, rising consumer expectations for speed, and an innovative rewards landscape are reshaping the value proposition of debit payments. This report examines three trends that financial institutions, fintechs, and payment networks must follow to stay ahead of a rapidly evolving market.
First, debit credentials are increasingly going digital. Card-not present transactions now account for more than half of all debit and prepaid transaction value, reflecting a fundamental shift in how consumers interact with their cards. From peer-to-peer payment apps to digital wallets and buy-now, pay-later installment plans, debit is meeting consumers where they live online, in-app, and soon through agent-initiated commerce. Institutions that fail to optimize for these environments risk losing volume.
Second, instant payments have moved from novelty to expectation. Networks such as Zelle, FedNow, and RTP are redefining what “fast” means for both consumers and businesses. As speed becomes a baseline requirement rather than a premium feature, financial institutions must build the infrastructure to deliver real-time money movement across a range of use cases and rails.
Third, debit rewards are back—in a different form. Constrained by the Durbin Amendment for large issuers, rewards innovation is arriving through co-branded loyalty partnerships, fintech programs, and crypto-linked offerings. Airlines, hotels, and digital-first platforms are leveraging debit’s accessibility to create new acquisition and engagement dynamics that everyone should watch closely.
