Overview
Point-of-sale systems are the backbone of payments for many small businesses. A solution for electronic payment processing, the POS system allows merchants to accept credit and debit card payments. The market is crowded with players offering a variety of systems, ranging from hardware devices to accompanying software and solutions that integrate into an all-in-one solution. Some solutions are cloud-based, requiring only the purchase of a tablet, such as an iPad, and a small card reader to accept card payments. Others are entirely purpose-built, all-in-one terminal devices. Numerous providers also offer vertically specific solutions, such as Toast, that specialize in payment solutions for restaurants and dining, although some providers have expanded into other areas.
